Case Study — Denner AG · Swiss Food Retail

Stabilization and Automation of a Microsoft Fabric Data Platform

Stabilization and performance optimization of the central Microsoft Fabric data platform.

[Data Engineering] [Production Released] [Retail]

The Client

Denner AG is the leading food discounter in Switzerland with an annual revenue of 3.9 billion CHF and over 870 retail stores.

The Challenge

Ensuring absolutely stable, high-performance, and error-free dbt pipelines within a complex Data Mesh and Medallion architecture inside the Microsoft Fabric ecosystem. Elimination of critical performance bottlenecks (e.g., 'Resource Limit Exceeded' errors and unpredictable deadlocks).

Our Solution

  • Analytics Engineering

Assuming full architectural responsibility for over 1,200 dbt models. Systematic refactoring of complex SQL transformation logic.

  • Process Automation

Design and development of an innovative, reusable Python library (lib_pegasus) for the complete automation of recurring data engineering tasks.

  • Observability

Introduction of seamless and context-rich logging mechanisms as well as dbt tests for maximum transparency and improved failure diagnosis in production.

Results

Measurable Results

Maintainability
Substantial increase in development velocity across the entire internal team through standard libraries.
Security & Stability
Complete stabilization of mission-critical ETL processes and elimination of all runtime-critical performance bottlenecks under massive data volumes.
